Muhammad was the founder of the religion Islam. He is said to be a prophet of Allah, or God.
Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570. His father died before he was born and he lost his mother soon after. He grew up with his grandfather, who died soon afterward. He began trading, journeying to Syria. In 595, he met and married Khadijah, a 40 year old widow.
In the year 610, the angel Gabriel appeared to Muhammad while he meditated and revealed that Muhammad was a prophet. Muhammad only revealed his revelations to his wife at first, but soon after, he revealed the revelations to everyone in Mecca. Most Meccans refused to convert, but some did, becoming Muhammad's followers. Following threats form Mecca's leaders, Muhammad and his followers traveled to Medina, where they were welcomed and protected. While in Medina, Muhammad scored several military victories against Mecca, with few casualties. Medina was then sieged for 2 weeks. Mecca lost all trade between Syria. Finally, Muhammad conquered Mecca, then set off in conquest of Arabia.
In 632, Muhammad performed his first pilgrimage, showing his followers the rites of the annual pilgrimage. He delivered the famous Farewell Sermon, appointing a successor. A few months after, Muhammad fell ill and died at his wife Aisha's house. The Sunnah gives record of his sayings and actions.
